The fourth specialized auction of calligraphy, Iranian and Islamic art, Baran auction, was held at the International Conference Center of Rayzan on Friday, November 9. It took in 26, 26 billion tomans (over $2 million).
Five folios from a rare manuscript of the Shahnameh, the epic masterpiece of the Persian poet Ferdowsi, was the top lot of the Friday night, selling for 9 billion tomans ($750,000), became the most expensive artwork sold in an auction in Iran. The manuscripts inscribed in the nastaliq style of Persian calligraphy dates back to the Timurid era (ca. 1370-1507).
The second highest-priced item sold at the auction was a miniature portrait of wife of the King of India Princess Nawab Akbari Beigom, decorated with calligraphy works around it. The artwork had been created by an Indian artist during the Zand dynasty (1751-1794). It fetched 5.7 billion tomans.
A cylinder bearing a Persian translation of the Cyrus Cylinder by calligrapher Hossein Niktalab was the third highest-grossing item at the auction, selling for 3.9 billion tomans. The inscription weighs 65 kilograms, containing over 8 kilograms of turquoise and 18.5 kilograms of opal stone.
The fourth most expensive work of the auction was a ring bearing verses of the Holy Quran engraved by Hossein Yasavul, which fetched 900 million tomans.
